Summit Africa Private Equity Fund I, backed by 27four Investment Managers, has announced a transformative investment in Apex Surgi Centre, acquiring a 55% stake to accelerate the growth and impact of this pioneering healthcare provider in Soweto. The investment, finalised in November 2021, is designed to support Apex Surgi Centre’s mission of delivering affordable, high-quality surgical care to underserved communities and to address the pressing need for accessible healthcare solutions in South Africa’s townships.
Founded by a dedicated group of Soweto-based doctors, Apex Surgi Centre has quickly established itself as a leader in day hospital services, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional acute hospitals. By eliminating overnight stays and streamlining surgical processes, Apex reduces the financial burden on patients while maintaining exceptional standards of care. The facility is strategically located to serve a catchment area of over one million residents, addressing a critical shortage of patient day beds and meeting significant local demand for surgical services.
Summit Africa’s investment will enable Apex Surgi Centre to acquire advanced medical equipment and expand its facilities, with plans already underway to commission a second day hospital in Johannesburg’s Waterfall area. In partnership with Crestcare, operational management has been optimised, resulting in increased treatment rates and enhanced operational efficiencies. The collaboration also aims to boost employment, with Apex Soweto expected to nearly double its workforce as facility utilisation grows.
This partnership has furthered transformation, diversity, and inclusion goals, significantly increasing black ownership and women’s representation within the organisation. Community outreach initiatives, supported by grant funding and technical assistance from investors, are raising awareness of Apex’s services and deepening local engagement.
Summit Africa’s commitment to Apex Surgi Centre underscores its strategy of driving sustainable impact and robust returns, while advancing access to affordable, quality healthcare in South Africa’s most populous communities.
