Vuna Partners Fund I, a leading South African private equity fund backed by 27four Investment Managers, has announced the successful acquisition of an 80% equity stake in 4PL Group Proprietary Limited (4PL), a prominent integrated supply chain and logistics company headquartered in Irene, Pretoria. The remaining 20% of 4PL will be retained by the company’s management team, ensuring strong alignment and continuity as the business enters a new phase of growth.
Founded in 2006, 4PL Group has established itself as a key player in the logistics sector, offering end-to-end supply chain solutions across road, rail, sea, and air, as well as import/ export clearance, warehousing, and advanced tracking technologies. With a team of 260 professionals, 4PL manages the transportation of over 240,000 tonnes of cargo monthly, serving more than 450 clients in South Africa and beyond.
The acquisition marks the exit of Mergon Group, which has been 4PL’s investment partner since its inception. Brendan Pearson, CEO of 4PL Group, expressed gratitude for Mergon’s support and welcomed the new partnership: “We are now embarking on the next chapter of 4PL’s journey together with Vuna Partners, with whom we anticipate a future of transformative, empowered growth, sustainable expansion into new markets and long-term mutual success”.
Siya Nhlumayo, CEO of Vuna Partners, highlighted the rationale behind the investment: “4PL has reported consistent revenue and operating profit growth, even amid economic headwinds. The high quality of its earnings and the strength of its management team make 4PL an ideal addition to our portfolio. Our investment also enhances 4PL’s empowerment credentials, advancing its transformation goals”.
This transaction underscores Vuna Partners’ commitment to backing high-performing South African businesses and driving both commercial returns and meaningful transformation in the logistics sector.
